Types of Antique Locks
There are several types of antique locks that were commonly used throughout history:
Warded locks: These locks use a set of internal obstructions, or “wards,” to prevent the lock from opening unless the correct key is used. Warded locks were some of the earliest locks used and can be found in ancient Egyptian tombs dating back to 2000 B.C.
Lever locks: These locks use a series of levers that must be correctly aligned in order for the lock to open. Lever locks were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries and can be found in a variety of settings, including homes and businesses.
Pin tumbler locks: These locks use a series of pins that must be correctly aligned in order for the lock to open. Pin tumbler locks were first invented by Linus Yale Sr. in 1848 and are still in use today.
Padlocks: These locks use a shackle that is inserted through a case and locked with a key or combination. Padlocks have been in use for thousands of years and can be found in many cultures around the world.
Chubb Detector Locks: These locks are specially designed locks which were patented by Charles and Jeremiah Chubb in 1818, to prevent lock picking and lock drilling.
Time locks: These locks are used to secure safes, vaults and strongboxes, using a clock or timer mechanism to control access. Time locks were used in the late 19th century and early 20th century.
It’s worth noting that these locks have evolved over time and many have changed with the technology and some of them may have been replaced by modern locks. These are antique locks that have historical significance.
